  • Battling the Boilermakers in 2018
Purdue will be the most beatable conference opponent for the Illini in 2018. In 2017, the Illini were only able to remain competitive in conference games against Indiana, Rutgers and Minnesota. Though a drastic turnaround next season is unlikely, more competitive play from the Illini against conference foes must be seen in the 2018 season. The 2018 slate does feature games against Rutgers and Minnesota, but the October 13 Homecoming matchup with Purdue seems to be the best opportunity for the Illini to record their first conference victory since the 31-27 win against Michigan State on November 5, 2016. Just as the Illini struggled to remain competitive while playing record numbers of freshmen on both sides of the ball in 2017, Purdue rode a bevy of experienced seniors to a 6-6 record and a bowl invitation in head coach Jeff Brohm’s first season. Much of the Boilermakers’ attrition lies on its defense, as Purdue loses eight of its top 12 tacklers to graduation. Put another way, 393 of the 629 tackles made by Purdue’s top 12 tacklers in 2017 were made by players who will not be on the team in 2018. On offense, the Boilermakers lose receivers Anthony Mahoungou, ...

  • James Crawford: Defensive Playmaker
The versatile senior anchored the Illini defense in 2017 Fighting Illini football is no stranger to plucking talent out of Florida, and James Crawford is certainly one of the better Floridians to take the field for the Illini in recent memory. In 2017, Crawford was a bastion of consistency and reliability during a season that was fraught with inexperience and mistakes. He led the Illini in tackles for loss with 5.5, and he tied for the team lead in sacks (4.0), forced fumbles (3) and fumble recoveries (2). Crawford also led the Big Ten with 0.33 forced fumbles per game, which was good for seventh in the nation. The 2017 Defensive MVP clearly had forcing fumbles down to a science: What a career! I’ve Literally played it all! Check out my Career Highlight @IlliniFootball https://t.co/DgOmntPMlS pic.twitter.com/EX9ugOEPNG— Sacks5thAvenue_ (@James5Crawford) February 13, 2018 He isn’t kidding when he says that he’s “played it all,” as he was recruited out of high school to be a safety at Illinois. Crawford then amazingly came full circle, playing the DB/LB-hybrid STAR position in the Tim Banks defense, while later moving to linebacker in 2016, and finally finishing his Illini career as ...

  • Jaylen Dunlap has seen it all
Senior corner nabs first-career interception in final year. Illinois football once had so much promise. One of the biggest building blocks was a fresh-faced young corner from Crete-Monee near Chicago. An under the radar signing in the class of 2013, Dunlap built himself into one of the more reliable defenders on the team, usually working against the top receiver on the opposing team. His ball skills never presented themselves, however, as the other team rarely threw in his direction. His 2014 season was also marred by injury, as he watched from the sidelines as his teammates made a bowl run, ultimately losing to Louisiana Tech in the Heart of Dallas game. Dunlap has seen it all here, as he's experienced the highs of winning (rare) to the lows of a winless Big Ten season. Coaching changes, defensive scheme changes, you name it and Dunlap has seen it. Through it all, Jaylen Dunlap has been the steady presence, cheering his teammates on and bleeding Orange and Blue. Finally, after a couple seasons of solid defensive play, with no personal reward (i.e. an interception), he finally got his against Indiana this season It was a nightmare season for all intents ...

  • Malik Turner: Through Thick and Thin
The senior receiver gave the 2017 season everything he had. Malik Turner faced considerable adversity during his four years in Champaign. He played under three different head coaches and saw many of his receptions go to younger players during his senior year. In spite of it all, Turner finished his career with the ninth-most receiving yards (1,804) and ninth-most receptions (143) in Illini football history. He was one of Illinois’ most consistent receiving threats in 2017, despite the inconsistency he was forced to deal with at the quarterback position. As a tall and long receiver recruited for Bill Cubit’s offense, Turner also found himself at a disadvantage in Garrick McGee’s offensive schemes relative to the shorter and quicker freshmen receivers who ...

  • “Kickers are People Too”
Chase McLaughlin certainly put his share of points on the board for the Illini in 2017 While the 2017 Illini offense struggled to get the ball into the endzone, Chase McLaughlin did his part to put it through the uprights. His ability to make field goals ended up being the difference between victory and overtime in the Illini win over Ball State, and it narrowed the deficit in other games. His talent and importance to the team in 2017 was plain to see. During that season, McLaughlin led all players in total points scored with 53 — which wasn’t a hard margin with the anemic offense. He was also a perfect 17-17 in PATs and 9-9 in field goals within 40 yards. McLaughlin is a talented kicker and he certainly demonstrated that on the field in 2017, but he burst onto the scene for many Illini fans through the entertaining “Kickers Are People Too” trick shot videos that he made during his younger days: Good kickers can help teams to win close games, and they are imperative in overtime situations. The offense simply must score more touchdowns in 2018 if the Illini are going to substantially improve, but it ...

  • 2018 Illinois Football Recruiting Class Review
Let’s talk ‘bout them ‘croots I guess. Illinois football wrapped up signing day on Wednesday for the 2018 class. The class includes 24 new Illini joining the program that is looking to rebuild itself — or maybe more accurately just build itself — into a competitive program once again in the Big Ten. This was the third class brought in by Lovie Smith and his staff. New this year was the early signing period in mid-December, which was heavily utilized by recruits to the surprise of many coaches around the country. Illinois was able to secure some of their top targets early, but struggled to bring together the rest of the class after the early signing period. Here’s a list of the newest members of the Illinois football team. This class of recruits is ranked lower than the 2017 class — Smith’s first full class. Illinois’ recruiting class is ranked 55th nationally by ESPN, 55th by 247 Sports, and 50th by Rivals. That is good for 13th, 12th and 12th respectively in the Big Ten. In 2017 Illinois was unanimously ranked 10th in the Big Ten and within the top 50 nationally. While recruiting may have dropped ...

Phillips is going to play a key role in the linebacker corps in 2018, as that position was hit ...
