Brad Underwood and the Fighting Illini are still searching for a post player. Fighting Illini basketball’s search for a big man will unfortunately continue for the foreseeable future. On Saturday afternoon, former Georgetown forward Akoy Agau announced a commitment to SMU, picking the Mustangs over Illinois, Maryland, Washington State, Old Dominion, and California State Northridge. The Omaha native will be immediately eligible as a graduate transfer. Georgetown grad transfer Akoy Agau tells me he's committed to SMU.— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) May 27, 2017 Agau told the Omaha World-Herald that he selected the Mustangs for a variety of reasons, but primarily because he has an opportunity to earn early minutes. "I chose SMU because I felt like it was the best situation for me to succeed both athletically and academically," Agau said. "I will have an opportunity to come in and earn minutes there while getting a chance to be productive." As a junior, Agau averaged 4.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game for the Hoyas while shooting 50.6% from the field and 84.0% from the free throw line. The 6-foot-8 big man took a visit to Champaign earlier this month, and Illinois seemed to be in ...

  • BREAKING: Illinois guard Jalen Coleman-Lands to transfer after two seasons
In a surprising move, the sharpshooting guard will leave the Fighting Illini. Illinois guard Jalen Coleman-Lands has been granted a release from the basketball program, according to a statement from the University. The junior will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2017-18 season. A four-star prospect out of Indianapolis, Coleman-Lands was the highest-rated player brought in by former head coach John Groce. He made an instant impact, too, by breaking Illinois’ all-time record for most three-pointers made by a freshman (87). While he had stretches of inconsistent play and streaky shooting from behind the arc during his short time in Champaign, JCL had an excellent sophomore season, averaging 10.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game with a 42% shooting percentage from three-point land. Frankly, this move comes as a complete surprise. Coleman-Lands figured to be one of the key players on next season’s squad following the graduation of Malcolm Hill and others. Rumors regarding another transfer had been swirling for the past couple of weeks, but Coleman-Lands’ name wasn’t exactly on the radar until very recently. This marks the second transfer since the acquisition of Brad Underwood in March. Junior wing D.J. Williams, another ...

Illinois head coach Brad Underwood announced Wednesday that Mark Alstork has signed a financial aid agreement and will join the Fighting Illini as a graduate transfer. Alstork is a 6-5, 190-pound guard from Dayton, Ohio. He attended Wright State, earning first-team All-Horizon League honors this past season after ranking third in the league in scoring with an average of 19.0 points. Alstork also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists and was among conference leaders in 3-point shooting (.387, seventh) and free throw percentage (.846, fourth). He totaled 70 three-pointers on the season, ranking seventh in the Horizon with an average of 2.2 treys per contest. "We're very excited to welcome Mark to our program and the Fighting Illini family," Underwood said. "He is a proven scorer who has done it consistently at the Division One level. He scores the ball in a variety of ways and has great versatility. Mark will provide veteran experience and brings tremendous character and leadership abilities to our basketball team." Alstork scored in double figures in 27 of 32 games, with 17 outings of 20-plus points including three 30-point performances. He registered a career-high 39 points vs. Toledo on Nov. 19. The Ohio native also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Alstork originally committed to play for Ball State as a three-star prospect out of high school. DePaul achieved an overall record of 9-23 (2-16) during the 2016-17 season. Eli Gage, a soon-to-be junior guard, led the team in scoring with 15.6 points per game. Chicago native Billy Garrett Jr. was another major contributor for the Blue Demons, however he’s set to graduate this Spring.
