  • Key Matchups: Illinois vs. North Carolina Central
Who leads the NCCU Eagles? North Carolina Central Eagles The last matchup for the Illini in the Global Sports Invitational, the North Carolina Central Eagles are 2-4 on the season. UT-Martin and Marshall handed the Eagles a pair of losses, and their lone win came against Southern University, 80-67. Raasean Davis The redshirt junior transfer from Kent State has been a huge addition (figuratively and literally) to this N.C. Central team. Davis is a 6-foot-10 center who is having a great start to the year. He’s recorded a double-double in each of the last two games and is averaging 16 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per a game. He is a key reason why the Eagles are outrebounding their opponents by almost nine rebounds per game. Reginald Gardner Jr. Gardner Jr. is a freshman at NCCU and is the biggest threat from deep for the Eagles. He’s one of just two guys on the team with over five made threes. Other than his outside shot, he doesn’t get to the line a whole lot, but when he does, he’s a good free throw shooter. The Illini will attempt to limit the amount ...

  • Illinois 96, Augustana 62: What we learned
Illinois handled D-III Augustana without any drama on Thanksgiving eve. Illinois is off to a 5-0 start after defeated D-III Augustana at home. Here’s the top takeaways. 1. Augustana is certainly a D-III School Augustana, from Rockford, Illinois, is one of the better D-III schools in the nation. They made it to the National Title game last season and finished D-III runners-up. That being said Augustana sure looked like a D-III team playing a major conference D-I squad. Augie made 29 turnovers, and gave up 36 points off those turnovers. They were sloppy with the ball and struggled to get shots off on the night, only attempting 46 field goals compared to 68 from Illinois. This was always going to be a loss for them. They are still a great program and we wish them all the best going forward. That being said, Illinois looked how they should against a side like this, but there were still times where Brad Underwood was unhappy with the performance. He subbed out every starter early in the second half. Underwood demands intensity at all times for his players. We will see if they have the stamina to keep it up all season. 2. ...

  • Thankful for Underwood
Thanksgiving is a Time for Reflecting On Hoops At some point tomorrow night my mother is going to grab her wine glass, tap the side gently with a knife and then conduct her version of the Spanish Inquisition with the entire Thanksgiving table. Through pointed questioning, each family member will be forced to say what they're thankful for this year. Extracting sentiments is a time-honored tradition of hers, and usually it's an exercise of intricate brutality. You better have an answer, and it better be sweet! But, this year, Brad Underwood has thrown a real wrench into my Thanksgiving preparation. Will it be acceptable when I hijack the yearly waterfall of compliments to my wife and bestow them on Underwood? What about the Thanksgiving hosts, my Uncle Jack and Aunt Shelley? While their dinner is assuredly going to be a marvelous exploration of standard fall delights, Thanksgiving is but once a year, and Illini basketball is there for me through the spring! OK, maybe I'll need to add some context at the table when it's my turn to give thanks. When I first went to Illinois, I knew very little about the tradition of Illini basketball, but shortly ...

  • Fighting Illini Men’s Basketball Scouting Report: Augustana College Vikings
The Fighting Illini host the Vikings on Friday at the State Farm Center. Who are they? Augstana College is a small Division III school in Rock Island, Illinois. The Vikings compete in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, which includes schools like North Central College, Illinois Wesleyan University and Elmhurst College. What did they do last year? In their conference and division, the Vikings had an excellent season in 2016. They finished the year with a 24-9 record, going 11-5 in the CCIW. Augustana had an incredible postseason as well, moving through the Division III tournament all the way to the title game. Although Augustana lost 79-78 to Babson College (it’s in Massachusetts — don’t worry, I had to look it up), I think Vikings fans would agree that the season was a great success. Key losses, Key returners Augustana is returning most of its leading offensive threats from a year ago. Junior guard Chrishawn Orange led the team with 16.4 points per game in 2016-17 and was fifth in the conference, as well. In addition, Dylan Sortillo (11.3 points per game) and Nolan Ebel (3 assists per game) return to the team just a year ...

  • Underwood Ushers in an Exciting New Style
Through four games, we’re a fan of Underwood ball. With the departure of Malcolm Hill, Maverick Morgan, and many others this offseason, Coach Brad Underwood had quite the task ahead of him. In no aspect of the game were the Illini a juggernaut – offensively, defensively, nada, nothing. Coming from Oklahoma State, he turned a 12-20 team to a 20-13 one and coached an offense that ranked first in the nation in efficiency. With just five scholarship players returning, it was unsure who was going to lead the team this season. Through the first four games, we can see Brad Underwood’s style already paying dividends. During the John Groce era, we got familiar with stagnant offense and even more dismal defense. This is not something that suits well with the Illini fans, or Underwood himself. When the Illini lead decreased from 20 to 15 against Marshall, Coach Underwood took a timeout to chew out the team about their effort. Mediocrity is not something he is going to settle for. This type of discipline is exactly what a young, inexperienced team needs. It’s this type of accountability that he holds players to which will instill a winning ...

  • Illinois Fighting Illini Player of the Game: Kipper Nichols
The redshirt sophomore had a career night on Sunday. Kipper Nichols notched his first-career double-double Sunday night in a 91-74 win over Marshall. The redshirt sophomore had a team-high 17 points off of the bench, tied with Leron Black for the Illini. Nichols also added 11 rebounds, including three on the offensive glass, and only turned the ball over one time. "How many times did you see him get a rebound tonight and lead the break?" Illinois head coach Brad Underwood rhetorically asked the media at his postgame press conference about Nichols. Nichols took 12 shots to get his 17 points, but he was aided by eight trips to the free throw line, sinking seven of them. Underwood praised Nichols’ versatility in finding ways to score. "Kipper is a guy that can step out and shoot a three,” Underwood said. “We can put him in isolation. He can post up." A Cleveland native, Nichols sat out the first half of last season after transferring from Tulane. He appeared in 21 games and averaged 4.9 points and 2.9 rebounds on the season. This season is a different story, especially on the offensive end. He ...

The Illini improve to now 4-0 after a strong home victory against Marshall A strong defensive effort and balanced scoring attack helped the Illinois Fighting Illini trounce Marshall, 91-74, on Sunday night. The Illini had five players with double-figure scoring, led by junior forward Leron Black and redshirt-sophomore Kipper Nichols, who both had 17 points a piece. Nichols in particular had a great night as his 17 points, 11 rebounds were both career-highs, while this was also the first time in his career that he achieved a double-double. “(Underwood) and his coaching staff push us day in and day out to be the best we can be,” Nichols said. “Just the fact that I got to start out at the beginning of the year, get acclimated with his system and get those game reps has been really helping me so far.” The Illini finally shot the ball well from deep for the first time this season, hitting 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from three. Overall, the team shot 44.2 percent from the field. Junior forward Michael Finke had his best game of the season, scoring 13 points (3-of-4 from long-range) and collecting four rebounds, three of which were ...

The Illini look to go 4-0 on Sunday against the Herd. Well, they did it. The Fighting Illini men’s basketball team is 3-0. This Sunday, they’ll look to continue their season with win number four against the Marshall Thundering Herd at the State Farm Center. Marshall Thundering Herd Marshall, a team that competes in Conference-USA, comes to Champaign Sunday night with a 2-1 record. The Thundering Herd has wins over Tennessee-Martin (a 102-91 win in OT) and Southern (an 83-74 win on Nov. 13), both of which are teams the Illini have defeated this year. Let’s take a look at ways in which the Illini can take down the Herd: Key Matchups: Marshall Post Play vs. Finke/Black Marshall has three players that are listed at 6’9”, but two of those guys are averaging three points or less this season. In a way, this could actually be an advantage for Illinois, with Michael Finke (6’10”) and Leron Black (6’8”) taking the brunt of the play in the paint for Illinois. • Illinois vs. DePaul Basketball Report Card
Who impressed in the first big test of the season? Let’s hand out some grades to players, coaches, uniforms or whatever deserved a grade. The Illini defeated DePaul 82-73 in their first true test of the season as a part of the Gavitt Games on Friday night. Mark Smith: A+ The Freshman from Edwardsville led the Illini in scoring with a career high 21 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Smith went 12-12 from the free throw line and showed off his superb strength early and often. Smith is already the best finisher around the hoop on the team. The way he absorbs contact, hangs and adjusts is so natural. He makes it look so incredibly easy. His touch around the rim and use of angles is very rare for someone that young. His elite combination of speed and strength allows him to get a layup attempt or get to the line at will. If Smith can get a few three pointers to fall, he is going to be a nightmare for Big Ten coaches to gameplan for. The Kipper-Led Bench Mob: A Kipper Nichols also poured in a career high 16 points on 6-11 from the field and ...

It was the first matchup between the teams since 1957. Mark Smith’s nonstop aggression helped him score a season-high 21 points and lead the charge in an 82-73 victory for the Illinois Fighting Illini over the DePaul Blue Demons. He’s a great player, honestly, he’s going to be huge for us going down the road.” DePaul’s Marin Maric constant presence in the paint allowed the Blue Demons, who only trailed by seven at the break, to stay close in the first half. Some DePaul players certainly embellished on offense fouls from the Illini, but beyond that the officials were calling a very tight game between two aggressive teams. • Illinois needs to schedule more games in Chicago
Want to build a stronger brand in Chicago? Spend more time there. For the LONGEST time, we have heard about how the University of Illinois needs to control the city of Chicago from a recruiting standpoint. Fans and media alike continuously preach about how the Illini need to be able to recruit the city of Chicago well in order to have a successful program. But when we start looking at how the Fighting Illini are trying to push themselves into the mind of the Chicago basketball scene, the horrifying truth is that they’re not...until today. Before I start spewing opinions and takes, understand that tonight’s game against the DePaul Blue Demons was scheduled thanks to the “Gavitt Tipoff Games” series that was announced in 2015. The series takes place between the Big Ten and Big East conferences and will be played annually until 2022. Interestingly enough, the first two seasons of the games have resulted in 4-4 series ties. Tonight’s game between Illinois and DePaul could see the first win for either conference if DePaul wins. I’m not here to talk about the Gavitt Games. I’m here to talk about Illinois basketball and why they NEED to start playing in ...

  • Illinois Fighting Illini Scouting Report: DePaul Blue Demons
What can the Illini expect from Chicago’s Big East Team? Illinois will take on the DePaul Blue Demons in this year’s Gavitt Games at the State Farm Center on Friday night. Illinois is 12-6 against DePaul with the last matchup coming in 1957. About DePaul The DePaul Blue Demons are members of the Big East Conference. DePaul’s main campus is located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on Chicago’s North side. The Blue Demons just opened the Wintrust Arena in the South Loop. The new arena is just 20 minutes on the CTA red line from DePaul’s main campus on Fullerton Avenue and seats over 10,000 people. DePaul is hoping a new arena and improved team in the heart of Chicago will re-energize the program and return them to their glory days. The Blue Demons had a dominant run in the late 70s and 80s where they reached 14 NCAA tournaments in a 17 year stretch highlighted by the 1979 Final Four. Their best teams were headlined by Mark Aguirre who was the No. 1 overall NBA draft pick in 1981 and went on to win two NBA championships with the ‘Bad Boy’ Detroit Pistons. • Key Matchups: Illinois vs. DePaul
The Illini will continue to look towards the junior class for production. DePaul Blue Demons The DePaul Blue Demons opened up the 2017-18 season with a close loss at home against 13th ranked Notre Dame. Down just four at half to the Irish, a hot shooting performance from behind the arc built the lead to 13 for Notre Dame who never looked back. A team that returns four of five starters from last year, the Blue Demons can present some problems for the Illini tomorrow night. Here’s who to watch for: Tre’Darius McCallum The senior transfer from Indian Hills Community College started all 32 games for the Blue Demons last season. He’s averaging 15.5 points and six rebounds per game through the first two games of the season. McCallum can shoot the ball from deep too, as he’s 5-9 through the first couple contests. Max Strus Another standout transfer for the Blue Demons this season, Max Strus is averaging 13 points and five boards a game. Strus played for DII Lewis University his freshman and sophomore year before sitting out last season with DePaul. At Lewis, ...

How can Okoro and Lidell impact this team? Also some Finke news. After a really slow couple of weeks, we finally have some recruiting news. A former target commits elsewhere, and the staff continues to zero in high-priority post targets for 2019. There were also a couple offers put out to some kids still in the 2018 class. The Guys First, I would like to touch on the potential impact of a couple of recruits I’ve touched on before the Illinois is hot on the trail for. Francis Okoro or EJ Lidell would both be great gets on their own. If you were to get both of these kids the effect on the team would be monumental. Think of a potential starting lineup that includes the likes of Da’Monte Williams, Mark Smith, Ayo Dosunmu, EJ Lidell and Francis Okoro. That starting five would parallel any starting five in the entire country. Not to mention the depth that Lidell and Okoro would immediately bring as freshman. It is not hard to see that the current roster is a little bit short on post depth. You may be thinking to yourself, how would Illinois manage to land ...

  • Positives and Negatives from Illinois’ Lackluster Second-Half Showing
Last night’s game wasn’t all bad. In fact, there were a couple great takeaways. Following Illinois’ 77-74 win last night over UT-Martin, we got a better look as to what we can expect from Underwood’s team this year. After all, it’s hard to gauge what the team is going to look like this year from a blowout win like last Friday night. The Illini ended the half with a 44-29 lead sparked by a 19-5 run and a beautiful behind-the-back move by Leron Black. It looked like Illinois was going to take that momentum and roll the Skyhawks. The trio of Butler, Bogan, and Williams had other plans though as they nearly completed the come-from-behind victory. Regardless of the final score, there were a few bright spots in the win. Leron Black Redshirt junior and former Tennessee Mr. Basketball has had quite the tenure with the Illini, but it looks as if he may finally have it all figured out in Brad Underwood’s system. He scored 14 points and six rebounds in just 15 minutes against Southern last Friday night, and he followed that performance up with 23 points and eight rebounds ...

Illinois (2-0) defeated UT Martin (0-2) 77-74 in a game that lacked the same energy found in Friday’s home-opening win over Southern University, partly due to the absence of the pep band, which could not attend because of the Marching Illini’s annual ...

  • Illinois Fighting Illini Player of the Game: Leron Black
The junior forward notched a career-high against UT-Martin. Forget about the two missed shots just feet away from the basket with less than 20 seconds left in the game, and Leron Black essentially had a perfect night. Illinois’ junior forward was always a workhorse for John Groce as an underclassman, but he seems to understand his role changes completely under a new head coach this year as an upperclassman. Black played 34 minutes in Illinois’ second game of the season, a 77-74 win over the UT-Martin Skyhawks. It was not just his endurance and hustle that did it for the Tennessee native Sunday night. No, Black scored a career-high 23 points on 8-of-14 from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. In a game that was much closer than many pundits would have though, Black stepped up in the post as Illinois’ ‘center’ — a concerning term to coin him due to his being only 6-foot-7 — on offense and defense (eight rebounds). Black started the 2016-17 season by serving a suspension, and he was ultimately underutilized a season ago by Groce. Underwood currently has a young team lacking bigs. Some of the big ...
