  • Illinois’ Big Ten Tournament Scenarios
After the Purdue game, where do things stand? Illinois has one game left on its Big Ten regular season schedule (at Rutgers on Sunday) before beginning the 2018 Big Ten Tournament next Wednesday (Feb. 28). Yep, two Big Ten teams will have their seasons come to a close before we even get to March — wild. Minnesota, Illinois, Rutgers and Iowa have already clinched spots on the tournament’s first day, and each team has one game left in conference play before Day One. Minnesota currently leads the pack at 4-13 in conference play. With wins over Illinois, Penn State, Iowa and Rutgers this season, the Golden Gophers still have a game at No. 9 Purdue on the slate. Likely to be chalked up a loss on the Boilermakers’ Senior Night, we’ll consider Minnesota finishes 4-14. Illinois has played a ton of close conference games this season and has not been able to close out or play 40 minutes in a handful of them. The Illini have beaten Indiana, Nebraska (almost twice!) and Rutgers already, and one more #Illinutgers is scheduled. Assuming we don’t get a repeat of last year’s epic loss at Rutgers to close ...

  • Carsen Edwards’ 40 points leads Purdue past Illinois, 93-86
Leron Black tied a career-high with 28 points. The Illinois Fighting Illini sure showed why the word fight is in their name tonight against Purdue. In their last home game of the season, the Illini kept up with the Boilermakers the entire game, but Carsen Edwards’ 40 points (11-of-19 from the field, 14-of-16 from the free throw line, 4-of-8 from three) propelled his team to a 93-86 win. Edwards could not be stopped in the second half, scoring 25 points. “We’re just fortunate to have probably the best guard in our league,” said Purdue head coach Matt Painter. “I think he’s established himself as the best guard in our league.” The Illini were heavily outmatched in the free throw department as the Boilermakers shot 26-of-31 from the charity stripe and the Illini shot only 10 shots, making eight. Illinois junior forward Leron Black tied his career-high in points with 28 on 12-of-25 shooting from the floor and 3-of-7 from deep. Trent Frazier added 20 points, all of which came in the second and brought the spark the Illini needed in the second half when the Boilermakers were trying to pull away. Here are five games we’ll be watching this weekend! Next weekend begins a very important time in all of our lives: March! The final days of February are among us. Winter turns to spring. Despair turns to hope, and despite that giant rodent seeing his shadow a few weeks ago, the ice thaw coincides with superior college basketball in bars and living rooms throughout the country. • Illinois vs. Purdue: What Needs To Happen
In their final home game of 2018, what do the Illini need to do in order to come out on top against Purdue? As we draw to a near close on the 2018 regular season, the Fighting Illini do not have the record many fans — myself included — had hoped for in 2018. Sitting at 3-13, Illinois is a far cry from what this program used to be. Many of their losses in 2018 have been competitive, so there is solace in that regard. However, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. There are so many things that this team must improve on during this coming offseason, and Coach Brad Underwood is the right man to lead the charge. His style of coaching is a far cry from that of his predecessor. His boisterous and vocal leadership style has been a hit with some while berated by others. I, for one, appreciate seeing a coach get animated on the sideline, demanding the best of his players, while coaching from start to finish. That is how you wipe the losing off this program. The mentality of defeatism and the lackluster attitude that permeates the locker room will soon ...

Illini run out of gas in East Lansing, who stood out against the conference’s best team? Frazier’s 1st Half: A- Frazier kept the Illini in this one during the first half, as he’s done all season. Frazier had nine points and four assists in the first half. All of these points came from behind the arc when the Illini needed a big shot to keep it close. The freshman point guard showed great command and really controlled the pace of the game for the Illini. Although, Frazier struggled to stay hot in the second half and finished the game with 14 points, five assists and three turnovers. Leron Black: B+ Same song, different verse for Leron Black. He had another incredibly efficient night on the offensive end. Black had 20 points on 12 shots in only 22 minutes. Once again, the problem for Black was foul trouble. He picked up two fouls in the first ten minutes of the game, and his third came right at the start of the second half. Black’s foul trouble kept him off the floor for some crucial stretches when the Illini needed his scoring ability. The Supporting Cast: C- Mark Alstork ...

  • Purdue Scouting Report
Illinois has a chance to show its improvements made throughout this season. So far this season... Despite a disappointing two-loss trip to the “Battle 4 Atlantis” at the beginning of the season, Purdue bounced back to win 19 in a row before losing to no. 14 Ohio State on February 7th. It’s actually pretty remarkable, looking at the Boilermakers’ season. They lost to Tennessee (78-75 in OT) and Western Kentucky (77-73) in the “Battle 4 Atlantis” before going on their hot streak where they beat the likes of Arizona, Louisville, Maryland (twice), Butler and Michigan (twice) before the close loss to Ohio State. Note: Tennessee is now ranked and Western Kentucky is second in Conference-USA. Those losses don’t look quite as bad now as they did in December. But after the Ohio State loss, things seem to have gone south just a bit. Purdue has lost three of its last four, which includes a 57-53 loss at the 13-16 Wisconsin Badgers. They almost lost to Tony Carr and Penn State at home on Sunday, but came away with the 76-73 win. It might be too early to say, but things seem to be trending in the wrong direction for ...

  • Michigan State 81, Illinois 61: Top Takeaways
At least Michigan State dunked less in this game. The Michigan State Spartans captured a share of the Big Ten regular season title with their second win over the Fighting Illini on the season. Illinois was able to keep it close to start the game and only trailed 38-35 at the half. But Illinois had another second half scoring drought as has become customary for in 2017-18, and the Spartans were able to pull away for a stress free win on Senior Day. Illinois record is now at 13-16 (3-13) which locks us a below .500 record for the regular season in Brad Underwood’s first season in charge. Here are some top takeaways from yesterday’s loss. 1. It’s about Jimmy’s and Joe’s Many problems have been pointed to as a reason for Illinois’ struggles this season. Not having a big man. Inexperience. Installing a new system. Lack of offense. Defensive lapses. These all play a role. But as we saw against Michigan State last night, the main issue is quite simple. Illinois is not a talented enough basketball team. Illinois played a tremendous first half, but still trailed by five. It was just a matter of time until the ...

  • Michigan State overpowers Illinois after close first half
The Illini fell to the Spartans, 81-61. Well, it was fun while it lasted. The Michigan State Spartans, thanks to a dominant second half performance, took down the Illinois Fighting Illini, 81-61, on senior night. Miles Bridges finished with 19 points and Joshua Langford wasn’t far behind with 16 points. Leron Black led all scorers with 20 points and Trent Frazier was the next closest Illini with 14 points of his own. Bridges and the Spartans came out hot right out of the gate, going 4-of-4 from beyond the arc to start the game. It only took six minutes for Leron Black to pick up his second foul in the first half. As soon as he exited the game, the Spartans went on a 7-0 run to jump out to a 19-11 lead. Finishing at the rim became an issue for Illinois early on as it missed five of its early attempts at the rim. Mark Alstork had a strong presence early, getting eight quick points after he ripped Bridges at halfcourt and scored on a breakaway layup. This one has the making to be a long night for the Illini. The Illini travel to East Lansing tonight in what will need to be a Herculean-type effort for the orange and blue to emerge victorious. The Spartans are currently riding a 10-game winning streak and just picked up a huge come from behind win at Northwestern. They have dropped just one game at home this season and are looking to cap off their run for Big Ten regular season title with wins against Illinois and Wisconsin. A quick peek at the previous contest with Sparty this year will tell you exactly what you need to know heading into the rematch. Damage Control It’s not a question of IF Miles Bridges and Jaren Jackson Jr. are going to have their way with this team, but can Illinois at least keep it somewhat palatable. With Michael Finke likely out of the lineup again tonight, Illinois really, really struggles to field multiple guys at least 6-foot-7 or taller on the court at the same time. Greg Eboigbodin is out of his pay grade trying to keep up with the Spartans’ frontcourt lottery picks. Bridges and Jackson ...

  • Leron Black is the Big Ten’s Most Underrated Player
The numbers love Leron Black, and so should we. Leron Black now lives at the top of the scouting report. In fact, the only other name on the scouting report is Trent Frazier. They are the only double-digit scorers on this year’s Illinois team, and they have been the only consistent offensive pieces for the Illini all year. Last year every opponent was concerned about three things when they played Illinois: Malcolm Hill, Malcolm Hill and Malcolm Hill. Trying to stop Leron Black wasn’t at the front of many teams’ minds. Illinois also lacks outside shooting. This allows defenses to collapse on Black in the paint, over help, or play a zone. All of these things make a post scorer’s life more difficult. These were all ingredients to create a perfect storm for a letdown season from Leron Black, or even a disappointing plateau. Instead, Black has taken his offensive game to another level. His defensive rebounding numbers have taken a step back, but it’s very possible that the energy he’s had to expend on offense has had a great deal to do with his declined production on the glass. After his career-high 28 points versus Nebraska on Sunday, it’s ...

The Illini now have three Big Ten wins. While it was Senior Day in Champaign, junior forward Leron Black decided that it was going to be his afternoon. Black dominated from start to finish, and his 28 points and seven rebounds propelled Illinois to a 72-66 victory over Nebraska. Black shot 11-of-18 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. “I was able to knock down some threes tonight, so that’s what really got me going,” Black said. “Teammates were finding me in all the right spots so there was a lot of open shots.” The win ended a four-game losing streak for the Illini while also giving them their third conference win of the season. Black got help from sophomore forward Kipper Nichols (12 points and seven rebounds). Freshman Trent Frazier also tallied 12 points and sank 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. At halftime, Illinois held a 43-36 advantage and was on fire. The team shot 62.1 percent from the field and shot an even more impressive 77.8 percent from beyond-the-arc. • What if JCL was still on this team?
These are the questions that keep Illini fans up at night. After Brad Underwood was hired by Josh Whitman in mid-March, the Illinois basketball program began to change significantly. I don’t need to explain the Tilmon saga, but Underwood was able to nab the three other biggest recruits Groce had amassed — Mark Smith, Trent Frazier and Da’Monte Williams — to the relief of Illinois fans. But Underwood couldn’t retain everyone. He lost Jeremiah Tilmon to Missouri and Jalen Coleman-Lands to DePaul, via a transfer. I loved JCL. His freshman year was exciting, and he set an Illinois record with 87 made three-pointers. The Indy Star wrote a really nice feature piece about Coleman-Lands’ journey and why he chose U of I. He talked a lot about the business school in Champaign — now the Gies College of Business; thank you Larry Gies, you da real MVP — and a vision for his future in Champaign. His sophomore year was admittedly disappointing. His three-point percentage dropped off a bit, his defensive capabilities were exposed and his ball handling left something to be desired. Nothing a coach who took a 12-20 Oklahoma State team into a 20-12 NCAA ...

  • Nebraska Scouting Report
Will the Illini slide continue? With Illinois’ season already in the toilet, is it bad if I wouldn’t be totally completely upset if Nebraska won? Forget the fact that I think Tim Miles is a swell guy — right now, Nebraska is projected as one of the first four out of the tournament. I think this is a travesty. I know their SOS isn’t spectacular, and they don’t have an abundance of quality wins, but 20-8 overall and 11-4 in the Big Ten is pretty damn solid if you ask me. More reason that Brad Underwood should get his guys fired up, especially considering how the Illini lost the first matchup with Nebrasketball. So far this season You already know its record, but Nebraska really has pieced together a very nice season. Again, not a lot of major wins here; just consistency. Early on in the season, they beat then-No. 17 Minnesota by double digits. The Huskers scored 104 in a win against UTSA. They beat Northwestern in Rosemont, Michigan at home and most recently defeated the Maryland Terrapins. Tim Miles is a great guy. I’m not sure how I know that, but I am certain of it. Remember ...
